Mining our Industry Resources… ELECTRO-MOTIVE DIESEL, INC.
EMD, formerly owned by General Motors Corporation, is one of only two global original equipment manufacturers of high-powered diesel-electric locomotives for freight transit and has the largest installed base in the world. For more than half a century, Electro-Motive diesels have hauled freight and passengers, powered ships, and generated electricity for over 100 countries around the globe.

Greenbriar saw a valuable franchise behind an under-managed, non-core business and worked for nearly 2 years with GM and EMD’s rail customers and unions to buy the company. Navigating this complex due diligence process and strategic redevelopment called for contributions from many of our industry connections, including the former President and CEO of GM Asia and the founders of the Wisconsin Central Railroad, as well as the installation of a new senior management team led by CEO John Hamilton. Before closing the investment, the Greenbriar team had developed a detailed vision for the business and began implementation on day 1.

Together, EMD and Greenbriar successfully positioned the company for a future of innovation and service to the fast-changing global railroad and power products industries.

EMD was sold to Progress Rail Services, a subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc. in August 2010.
